The `act as if ' principle
Often called `the father of psychology', William James taught us the `Act as if ' principle. He said, "Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does."
He also said, "If you want a quality, `Act as if ' you already have it."
There is a third way to use the `Act as if ' principle: If you don't know what to say or do in a situation, think of someone you know or know of who would know exactly what to say or do. What would they do? How would they do it? What would they say? What silent messages might they be giving themselves?
Now that you know clearly what your role model would say and do, step mentally into their shoes and `Act as if ' you're them. This will at least start you moving in the right direction and might even produce the precise result you hope for. And next time you're in a similar situation, you'll have this experience to build on.
Let's face it - learning from others is a lot less painful than learning from your own mistakes!
